Need to Install a Smoke Detector?
The smoke detector is used for a fire alarm, but also within the framework of security. It allows you to be warned of a fire quickly and is especially useful when you
are not on the premises or when you’re asleep.
By-laws, depending on where you reside, requires every individual to install at least one Smoke Alarm in their home.
In the case of a rental, this installation must be carried out by the tenant, except for seasonal or furnished rentals.
Concerning its installation, you should know that a smoke detector must be installed
on the ceiling or on top of the walls to detect any stagnant smoke.
Where to Install the Detector?
Of course, bedrooms are the rooms to be preferred for the installation of a smoke detector, in the event of a fire. Otherwise, the stairs are often very quickly invested by a fire, the presence of a detector will then allow you to be promptly notified. Finally, rooms such as the living room (television, computer…) equipped with numerous electrical devices are often responsible for fires.
Note: Avoid installing a detector in a bathroom, kitchen or bathroom window.
proximity to a ventilation system; the detector could be triggered for nothing or, on the contrary, not to go on in a fire.
On the other hand, it is not recommended to install its sensor at the angle formed by the wall and ceiling. The air is not circulating at this place; the smoke will not disperse in this area. Therefore, it is necessary to leave at least 10 cm between the detector and the angle.
Smoke Detector Models
You can choose between two main options despite there are many more on the market.
1. The Autonomous Smoke Alarm Detector is very simple to install,
and it runs on batteries. In this case, it is best to purchase batteries from the
lithium, because they last about ten years.
Alkaline batteries, on the other hand, wear out quickly after a maximum of two years.
Some models are even equipped with a buzzer that lets you know when the battery is low.
2. The mains-operated smoke detector, on the other hand, works by default on the
main electrical network installed at your place, but it has been specially manufactured to operate for a period of one year. What if there is a power failure? It has a backup alkaline battery.
If you are going on holiday, you can then cut the power.
